A GROUP of French trawlermen took a forklift for a joyride after a few drinks last week.

The men from the Saint-Brieuc-based Mor Breiz returned to their vessel early on Friday morning and decided to use the harbour vehicle.

‘It was dealt with the following morning,’ said deputy harbour master Tony Pattimore.

‘The skipper of the boat was brought onto the quayside and told what behaviour we expect from these people when they are in our harbour.

‘There was a slight problem, but it was dealt with and everybody was happy with the outcome.’

The vessel had come into St Peter Port in the company of another, Les Casquets, to shelter from the gales.

It was allowed to depart the following day.

Just a thought, why did the forklift have the keys in still? Lucky this wasn’t children as they may have ended up In the harbour.

My thoughts exactly. A couple of drunk frenchies have a bit of fun on the way back to the boat. GP story? Bad frenchies. Real story? Harbour procedures.

It’s true, about time someone thought of the children.

Whenever I send mine off to play amongst the cranes, containers and all the other fun things behind the restricted access security gates on the quayside I always tell them to leave the forklift trucks alone. They are very dangerous.

By the way, have you tried getting forklift insurance for the under 12′s? It’s un-posibble!

I like the implication that children are more likely to crash into the harbour while riding a stolen fork lift than a drunken sailor.

What shall we do with the drunken sailor?
