Merrien and Watson need Sarnian votes in countdown to CI Sports Personality of the Year

Tuesday 27th January 2009, 2:29PM GMT.

ISLANDERS can still have their say on who will be crowned the 2008 Sportingbet Channel Islands Sports Personality of the Year.

The winner of the most prestigious award in the CI sporting calendar will be announced on Thursday.

Guernsey’s golden girls Alison Merrien (pictured) and Heather Watson are among the five-strong field, along with Jersey trio of Matt Banahan, Elizabeth Cann, and Serena Guthrie.

This year’s nominees will be hoping to emulate the success of previous winners including triple World Touring Car Champion Andy Priaulx, Great Britain World Championships and Olympics athlete Dale Garland and international cycling champion Ann Bowditch.

And with more than 1,000 votes already cast by the Guernsey and Jersey public, this year’s contest is expected to be the closest yet.

Voting lines will stay open right up until the winner is announced at the Sportingbet Sports Personality Awards Dinner at Beau Sejour on Thursday.
