Coastal coalition is to lobby for full sewage treatment
Wednesday 28th January 2009, 11:30AM GMT.
A COALITION of businesses is demanding that the States commits to full sewage treatment.
It will present Public Services minister Bernard Flouquet with a letter detailing the call on the steps of the Royal Court ahead of the States meeting this morning. All the businesses or their customers use the waters around the island.
Public Services has a report before the Assembly detailing the level of a wastewater charge it plans to bring in – some of which it wants to use to fund preliminary work for treatment.
Deputy David De Lisle (pictured) is using it as an opportunity to place an amendment that would ensure the money raised would go towards full sewage treatment and it effectively calls for the States to re-endorse its previous commitment to building a plant.
Island Rib Voyages representative D’Arcy Brimson said the States was not doing enough to protect the coastal environment.
‘Full sewage treatment is what our beautiful coast deserves and what island coastal businesses need to ensure we can thrive in this difficult time,’ he said.

Voice For Victims
Voice for Victims is a campaign aimed at promoting the rights of those affected by child sexual abuse.
Why are the Guernsey media giving so much space to the pressure group Surfers Against Sewage who are not even local?
Do they not realise that we will get a sewage treatment system whether or not they campaign?
Their time would be better spent campaigning in places that have a real issue with sewage, like Somalia or maybe the slums of Mumbai
Report abuse
I welcome the opportunity to eat local seafood that is not contaminated by human waste. Its time to face the facts and this is a painfully obvious one that must be changed. What are we thinking not acting on this?100 pounds a year for that privilage.. no problem for me.
