ELENA JOHNSON should be back in the top 20 when the new English national rankings come out next month.
The Sarnian badminton star (pictured), who is teaching in England and currently ranked 23, is playing as many tournaments as possible on the national circuit in pursuit of her goal, which is to represent Guernsey at next year’s Commonwealth Games.
‘I am working on getting my ranking up in order to qualify for Delhi and I have had a couple of good results that should see my ranking rise next month,’ Johnson said.
In the Northumberland Challenger event, Johnson reached the quarter-finals of the singles before she was knocked out by England number seven Kate Robertshaw.
Playing in the doubles with Kate Lester from Hertfordshire, she also progressed to the quarter-finals, recording a notable straight-sets victory over the English Universities pairing of Lauren Allinson and Gill Dabek.
Norfolk’s top pairing of Julie Pike and Catherine Cooper eventually accounted for Johnson and Lester.
