Aland 2009 to be largest Games yet
Thursday 29th January 2009, 2:29PM GMT.
THE global credit crunch has not dented the number taking part in this summer’s NatWest Island Games in Aland.
There were worries that, with the world plunging into recession and anticipated high costs during the week-long event on the Scandinavian island, the number of people participating would be drastically reduced.
However, that does not appear to be the case as statistics released by the Aland organisers show that it will be the largest Games in their 24-year history.
To date, 3,211 participants have been confirmed.
The press officer for the Aland Games, Rob Watkins, explained why theirs is proving to be the most popular yet.
‘This is only the second Games since the competition was expanded to 25 teams and the Games continue to grow over time,’ he said.
‘The relaxed nature and overall atmosphere of the competition encourages both people to come back and new competitors. Also, each of the host islands has been so different from each other it’s a totally new experience every time too.
