Jersey has zero interest in sharing cost of our tankers

06969161.jpgJERSEY will not pay toward the costs of Guernsey buying two tankers to keep the northern isle supplied with fuel.

Chief Minister Lyndon Trott told the House at this week’s States meeting that Jersey had been asked to contribute toward the £16m. cost of purchasing the two vessels that carry petrol, diesel, kerosene and aviation fuel.

The Policy Council voted to buy the vessels after the owner of the tankers went into administration in November, amid fears supplies would be lost.

There are only seven vessels worldwide capable of off-loading at St Sampson’s harbour because of size restrictions.

Jersey was asked to help out with the costs, but that request was declined.

Deputy Trott is set to receive a letter from Jersey’s chief minister, Terry Le Sueur, to tell him that the request has been turned down.

‘It is an area where we can work constructively, but we do not have the need as we have a tanker berth at La Collette that allows a variety of vessels to unload in the island,’ said Senator Le Sueur.

I think cutting off your nose to spite your own face, comes to mind.

About 40% of the work of the active vessel, the Vedrey Tora is supplying Jersey with oil.

Without that work the ship would be hopelessly uneconomic, as its only deliveries seem to be to St Sampson’s, and Peel in the Isle of Man.

Jersey, unloike Guernsey, does not have to rely on the unique tankers that are essential for St Sampson’s. We need them. They don’t need us.

Why did we need a crapaud handout anyway? Can’t we run these ships on a commercial basis?

Many ships are being laid up because of the economic crisis.

Tankers are suffering as well as others.Be grateful Jersey are providing some income.

    No work, no income.

The Vedrey Tora seems to have some work. The other ship the Vedrey Thor has very little work. She has beeb anchored in Liverpool since 19 January.

Good time to be a shipownwer???
