‘It’s history: Alderney’s most famous wreck’

Tuesday 3rd February 2009, 2:29PM GMT.

0545148.jpgALDERNEY diver Fred Shaw has welcomed news that the wreck of HMS Victory has been found.

He searched for the forerunner of Nelson’s Battle of Trafalgar flagship 30 years ago but found nothing.

The wreck’s location has remained a mystery since she sank near the Casquets, west of Alderney, on 4 October 1744 with the loss of all 1,100 officers and ratings.

Florida-based Odyssey Marine Exploration now claims to have found the 175ft man-of-war, which became separated from escorting vessels in a storm as they returned from fighting the French fleet off Portugal.

‘This is history – I would love to see what has been discovered,’ he said.

‘It’s the most important boat ever to sink off Alderney.’

Mr Shaw said he would have preferred a local diver to have made the find.

I would have preferred to have found it myself, but since I’m not an ROV that can survive at or below 1000 Meters, I’ll let Odyssey Marine work out a deal with the MoD folks.

    HooRay For Them !!!
The Victory ( well , at least the cannons and some cargo ) Will Rise Again !!

The news we are getting here at the other side of the world is that the Americans have raised a couple of cannons from Nelsons Victory and have ‘dissapeared’ with them, supposedly to some other world Port to lay claim to the Victory for themselves which, it is being suggested, means England would ‘lose’ such an important icon of the past.

Is this true? I sincerely hope not! Can it be done? Was the Victory found outside of Englands and the Channel Islands teritorial waters? Anyone know what the correct legal situation is?

Apparantly the wreck was found 100km away from the Casquets where it was thought to have sank – so it seems that it is nowhere near Alderney……

Sorry, Expat80, the news your report is wrong on most points. Only one cannon has been raised and it is in a Royal Navy conservation lab in the UK. And it’s not from Nelson’s Victory (which is beautifully preserved in Portsmouth) but from the predecessor, Balchin’s Victory. And it belongs to the MOD.
