Wheelchair service has ‘not been sidelined’
Wednesday 4th February 2009, 2:29PM GMT.
HEALTH and Social Services has refuted claims it decided not to improve wheelchair services and at the same time save tens of thousands of pounds.
Former board member Mike Hadley (pictured), chairman of the newly-formed Disability Forum, claimed yesterday that the department would not approve the introduction of a service costing £97,000.
He said its introduction would make huge savings as well as preventing pain and suffering for users.
‘It is beyond belief that after six months of prevarication they are not prepared to introduce this.’
But a spokesman for the department said the board had recently accepted a recommendation to introduce a service.
‘However, the board felt that this could be achieved in a more cost-effective way by working with other agencies,’ he said.
