North want more action

‘Clubs are missing out on football,’ said the man who still harbours hopes of a second title in three seasons in charge at the Northfield and a maiden Upton Park Cup triumph come five o’clock on 18 April.

‘I just don’t think three’s enough. Eighteen matches for a season starting in August and ending in March is not enough.

‘Twenty-four games is much better.

‘I’ve had a little chat with Dave [Finn, club president] about it. As the senior coach I want it and I think the players would be for it.’

The GFA board pushed hard for an 18-match Division One format in support of island coach Steve Ogier, who not only wanted more island games but also more training time.

The clubs, somewhat reluctantly in some cases, bowed to the pressure and the 18-match format was introduced for the current campaign. Ogier was subsequently ousted from office for his role in the Guernsey United project and the aim for regular island fixtures and get-togethers has not materialised.

Correct me if I’m wrong but aren’t there only 6 teams (at top flight) in the island. If so, that means currently playing each other 3 times in the league in one season. So Mick, or ‘El-Mick’ (as I believe he’s known within the local Morris Dancing community) would like to play each other 4 times a season? I can’t see how this will help with development but can see how it could lead to more injuries!

That’s very strange logic. Its a bit like saying that if football was banned altogether there would be no football injuries ! Injuries are part and parcel of any sport.

Exactly David – I’m glad we see eye to eye on this point.
