‘Revisiting kerbside recycling will add little to our findings’

0662970.jpgTHE Public Services Department is prepared to reconsider its position on the introduction of an island wide-kerbside recycling scheme.

But it believes that its original decision, that such a scheme is neither appropriate to Guernsey nor good value for money, was correct.

A requete being bought by Deputy David De Lisle (pictured) has a total of 19 signatories.

They want Public Services to prepare a report with details of plans and funding and how island-wide kerbside recycling can be implemented. And they want it brought to the Assembly no later than June.

The document should include provision for wet and dry items.

In June, Guernsey was said to be recycling 30.8% of its household waste and the States has set a target of 50% for next year.

I strongly believe that Public Services doesn’t want kerbside recycling because they are planning on building an incinerator in Guernsey (or so I understand from an engineer working for the states) and any dramatic increase in recycling would reduce the viability of an incinerator.
