Sort it out, say neighbours

Operator Island Waste last week unveiled plans to develop an indoor waste-sorting plant at the yard in St Andrew’s to address complaints about smell, mess and vermin.

It also plans to wash its vehicles’ tyres as they leave the premises to help reduce the mud left on surrounding roads.

But while many residents see the moves as steps in the right direction, they still want the facility to go elsewhere.

‘It’s not a suitable position for a site like this. It’s as simple as that,’ said accountant Allan Renyard, 66, who lives nearby. The States should find a more appropriate place, he said.

‘It’s a quiet location and there are more than 30 residential properties.

‘The trucks that go down to the tip can just about get out of the lane. It’s not good enough. It’s an awful exit down there at the best of times.’

Mr Renyard also doubted that wheel washing would work long term.
