Waste water charge agreed

06629701.jpgHOUSEHOLDERS will pay around £150 a year to use the toilet from 2010 after the States agreed to a new waste water charge this morning.

The Public Services Department proposed the move to contribute towards the cost of maintaining sewage infrastructure.

The charge also includes a £50 supplement to go towards progressing plans for full sewage treatment.

There were only a few voices of dissent concerned about the impact on the poor.

A successful amendment by Deputy David De Lisle (pictured) means that the States has again committed to introducing full treatment and that the £50 will explicitly go towards things like an environmental impact assessment to prepare for that.

Another amendment by Deputy Al Brouard means that people with greenhouses and fields that use water but not the sewage network will not have to pay the charge.

Great news for Guernsey’s water users, water related businesses and Guernsey’s reputation. SAS would like to congratulate the States for finally making the right choice and committing to full sewage treatment.

So does this mean that I will have to pay this in addition to my sewage tanker bill which is around £440 per annum?

Does this mean that we will all be given the opportunity to connect to the main drain if we are currently using a cesspit or maybe the charge will not be applicable to cesspit owners???
