Druce is gunning for Garland’s spot

TOM DRUCE has teammate Dale Garland in his sights as the pair head to Sheffield for this weekend’s UK indoor championships.
The two-day televised event doubles as GB trials for next month’s European Championships in Turin and both Guernsey athletes harbour serious hopes of making that trip.
Garland, of course, has become something of a regular in the GB 400m relay squad, but Druce believes he is capable of breaking into the ranks and winning his first major international representation.
‘My aim is to make the final,’ said the Bath-based runner, but given his ranking in a provisional entry list of 36, that would seem a big ask of him.
But Druce (pictured), ranked 13, is never lacking in self confidence and is serious about making the top six and Sunday afternoon’s final.
‘I think I need to run 47.5-ish, which would be an indoor PB. But I’m in a lot better shape than when I went to Birmingham. Yesterday [Wednesday] I ran 2.99sec. for a flying 30 [30m laser-timed time trial], which is sub 3sec. for the first time.’
