Slowdown or not, firms stay committed to apprenticeships

0720419.jpgEMPLOYERS are still keen to take on apprentices, a survey has confirmed.

It was sent to them by the College of Further Education, which runs the programme, as part of a yearly check.

Apprenticeship and work-based learning manager Alma Harradine said yesterday that most of the 160 employers who returned the survey intended to take on apprentices in the next three years.

‘The feedback we’ve had from talking to employers has been good – it’s been no different to previous years so far.

‘We were very pleased with the results. We asked them if they would be taking on apprentices in the next year and in two and three years’ time. I think we only had one who said they wouldn’t,’ she said.

The survey was conducted before Christmas to test employer satisfaction levels.

Good news. Apprenticeships should be encouraged within schools as a good career path and valid alternative to university/A-Level education, which is not suitable for everyone.
I now work in the IT department of a local finance company where I have been for the last 10 years however I continue to be grateful for the opportunity to start my career as an apprentice computer engineer at a local IT company.

The College should also make sure apprentices are given written contracts of employment as required by law but a few unscrupulous employers are not giving them and are exploiting the youngsters.

On a general point exploitation runs both ways; the amount of training employers commit to their staff only to see them move elsewhere once their skill sets have been upped is phenomenal.

However, the apprenticeship scheme is one of the successes of the Education Department.
