‘Flat’ Garland blows chance

0721432.jpgDALE GARLAND made the 400m final at the European trials in Sheffield, but after finishing last his place in the Great Britain relay squad looks all but gone.

Meanwhile Kylie Robilliard failed by a whisker to make it into her first senior UK final.

Garland had scraped into the final as a fastest loser, but come the moment of reckoning could not raise his game and placed last of six in a disappointing time of 48.05sec.

The title went to pre-race favourite Richard Buck of York, who clocked 46.41 to win comfortably.

Garland, who had hoped to be on the plane to Turin next month, said his chance had not completely gone, but he has not helped his prospects.

‘I just felt tired and flat all weekend.

‘Every race I had to work hard and it was a struggle. I was just glad to reach the final.’

He said he could redeem the situation with a good performance at this coming weekend’s Aviva Grand Prix at Birmingham, for which he has an invite, but for personal reasons he is unsure if he will be there.

Robilliard (pictured), the two-times English Schools champion, ran a season’s best of 8.61sec. in the senior women 60m hurdles, but missed out on qualifying by a few hundredths of a second. She then matched that time to finish second in the B final.
