Electoral roll review results yet to be seen

0530878.jpgFRUSTRATION is growing at a political level that a review of the electoral roll fiasco has not yet been published.

In April, some voters who registered online found themselves disenfranchised due to human error. Those running the general election of deputies took last-minute action to get a Royal Court ruling that allowed them to vote.

Other anomalies also occurred.

The Home Department announced a review and it had been understood the findings would go before the States last autumn. But department minister Geoff Mahy (pictured) and his board have still not seen the review despite it having been completed.

In a sign of the tension this has created politically, he mentioned it in the States when one of the civil servants involved in the review was present.

Deputy Mahy did not want to comment further until he had seen the report.

The operation of elections is kept at arm’s length from politicians, but it is understood there is still dismay at the length of time it has taken to publish the findings.

“The operation of elections is kept at arm’s length from politicians….”.

Well, not quite. I remember Deputy Valerie Renouf turning up at the Postal Headquarters (where the Electoral Rolls used to be prepared) and insisting to some unfortunate civil servant that he print for her a large number of labels all with the same message on. Such a task was not part of the offered service, but she seemed to think that civil servants were her personal servants.
