A MULTI-million pound marina for luxury boats could be developed in St Peter Port.

Public Services’ plans cover the Careening Hard, Cambridge Berth and a dog-legged extension wall from there towards the east of the Crown Pier.

It could cost up to £23m. to develop, although there is already private interest and it is believed it would be a significant revenue earner, about £2m. a year.

The proposal will form part of the States capital prioritisation debate when it will decide what projects to support up to 2012.

‘If you look at the harbour in its widest sense, the only area that has effectively had no development for in excess of 100 years is the Careening Hard area,’ said harbour master Captain Peter Gill.

‘It’s underutilised. If we created a marina for large boats – the top end of the market – it has the potential for being a significant income stream and to create a large number of jobs for people needed to support the boats. It would also take the pressure off the other marinas.’
