Drivers get the message

DRINK-DRIVING has hit an all-time low.
Almost two decades after Guernsey adopted a blood-alcohol limit, it seems local motorists have finally changed their habits.
And they might have to change them even more in a couple of years.
A review of the Drug and Alcohol Strategy is coming up at the end of the year and that will again look at the case for a lower limit.
‘Our 80mg limit is starting to look out of line,’ said strategy coordinator Andrea Nightingale.
The draft strategy included a proposal to lower the limit to 50mg but that was dropped from the Billet in October 2005 – much to the delight of the hospitality industry.
Last year saw just 143 arrests, more than 50 fewer than the previous year and almost 90 down on 2004.
The number of motorists subsequently charged fell by almost a quarter, from 155 to 119.

It is not clear whether d
Drink-driving or police checks hit all time low? Have you been out on Friday night?

I agree with Tom. By reducing the checks, less people get stopped so less drink drivers. In theory. What im worried about, is the number of people who go to drive home the morning after, after say 4 hours sleep, severly hungover and STILL OVER THE LIMIT! Police should also be working on catching these people aswel.

Credit where credit is due. It’s been a long old battle and public are getting the message. It’s been a long time since every 3rd car is weaving across the road like the good/bad old days.

It would be better to bring in a zero % for driving. If you Maimed or killed someone after say having only half a pint of beer, would you be sure that the alcohol played no part in the accident?

Neil
So you would be happy to forgo your licence for a couple of chocolate liquors?
How about taking your Mrs out on a birthday or valentines. Enjoying a bottle of wine or two. Get stopped the next morning on the way to work and asked to breath into the machine and yet again a big fine and you would lose your licence for a few years?
Maybe you don’t drink alcohol at all?
Do you use mouthwash then? This also contains alcohol. Once used it enters the system!
You’d be happy to criminalise mouthwash users then?
To keep you happy people would go having dogs breath.

Yes Paul I sometimes do drink a little alcohol but would not get behind the wheel of my car until I was fit to drive (unlike a small minority). How would you feel if a driver who had just consumed a couple of “Liquors” ran over one of your children ?? Be honest with yourself !.I have also been known to use a mouthwash too ! But prefer to brush my teeth a few times a day.
