I agree, I dread to think what distress is caused to a dolphin being pursued by a boat that closely like that, or what could happen if the boat hit one. Please keep a sensible distance and don’t harass the dolphins.

Stuart – I had the good fortune to encounter a pod of dolphins last summer as I returned from Herm in HMS Student Bob, far from being distressed, the dolphins actively sought out my boat and swam alongside for several minutes.
I would say that I did not seek out the dolphins or encourage their behaviour and I would be disappointed with any boatowner who did so.

Believe it or not, it is the dolphins who seek out boats!
They particularly enjoy playing on the bow wave of a sailing yacht:- no engine noise or vibrations to upset them. Usually you just see one a couple of hundred yards away from the boat and then others converge from all directions.
It’s a wonderful sight and I feel privileged to have witnessed this on several occasions.
