Government must steer the ship, says IoD head

0488873.jpgTHE States needs to go down the route of executive government, according to Institute of Directors chairwoman Shelagh Mason (pictured).

Speaking at last night’s IoD annual dinner, she said that while the new Assembly appeared more business-friendly there was still too much bickering and an inability to accept past decisions.

‘Our chief minister doesn’t have the power even if he has the will. Our ministers can only recommend to the House and those voting have 40-odd different parochial agendas.

‘We need joined-up executive government not only capable of creating a world-class regulatory environment, which has been created, but of steering a ship on a steady course to provide international credibility and domestic security,’ said Mrs Mason.

‘Decisions are tough. We are all anticipating the capital prioritisation debate, now postponed until May. Last year I asked, “can the new House mature enough, quickly enough to avoid a deficit and to concentrate on priorities, weighing up conflicting demands sensibly?”

‘Well can they? Have they?

‘The implications of saving St Sampson’s School are only now becoming apparent. Popularity in the short term may be the death knell for our economy and indeed our model of democracy.’

I am assuming that Ms Mason did her homework before speaking and realised that the Chief Minister supported the decision to keep the 2 primary schools open! How she can then use him as an example to support her argument is beyond me.

I agree with Sam. Whilst I understand where Shelagh is coming from, the reality is that most IoD members, if given the choice, do not want too much uncontrolled power given to Executive type government. What I believe is wanted is the best quality leadership who can govern by persuasion and logic rather than dictation. Democracy has its flaws but it is a fundamental part of having a free society.
Most Iod Members as most Chamber of Commerce Members ( and I am a member of both ) would I am sure have welcomed the States decision to change their mind about paid parking. What is wrong with that. You cannot pick out what subjects it is all right for the States to change its mind on and what it isn’t. In a democracy you have to put up with huge frustrations.
Shelagh had an excellent meeting with Jersey IoD Committee members recently about inter Island co-operation. Deputy John Gollop and I held a press conference prior to the 2004 Election advocating many ways Guernsey and Jersey could work together and also save money and resources. It is incredidibly irratating to see how slow that progress has been, but that is democracy.
