ANOTHER good turnout and very competitive racing at Les Amarreurs marked the second in the De Putron Fund Management-sponsored 2009 Duathlon Series.

The format this time was a Super Duathlon with five stages rather than the more usual three being split one-mile run/ six-mile bike/ one-mile run/ six-mile bike/ one-mile run.

These very short splits ensured constant changing in positions, with fast transitions the order of the day.

In the women’s race, Gail King, making her seasonal debut, just had the upper hand in the running stages to pull away from Shanine Johns in second.

Lyn Mahy, not so suited by the shorter bike routes in this event, was third.

Only three seconds adrift was Karina Bowie, who in her first season of duathlon racing, was top female novice with another excellent performance.

Once again it was fiercely competitive in the men’s race with less than two minutes between the top five.

However, despite that, the winner was never really in doubt.

Alan Rowe, also making his 2009 reappearance, took 20 seconds out of the field in the first run and then led at every transition to beat Ian Scholes by just under 40 seconds.
