Bels will need a ‘strong’ boss

MICKY OGIER is sure he will have a say in who replaces him as Bels’ coach and on the eve of the game which could take them to the brink of another title says whoever it is will have to possess one particular characteristic.

‘Whoever it is they will have to be strong.’

A third Upton appearance in four years will enable Ogier to retire in the knowledge he is the most successful Bels coach of all time and he even admits to having mellowed as he runs down the clock.

On his replacement he said: ‘I’m pretty sure that they [the Bels hierarchy] are going to ask myself and Shane [Totty, his assistant] with a view as to who should take over.

‘But I haven’t got a clue who it will be to be honest.’

Ogier’s side can go six points clear with victory today and apart from the suspended Charles Pinsard he has a full squad to choose from.

‘Matt Drillot is back – ‘a plus’ said Ogier – as are rival keepers, Rhys Gower and Scott Rowe.

It is half time in a very average Carling Cup Final and so I thought that I would catch up with the Sports news in the Guernsey Press from Saturday.

I really wish that the Press would think about and research what it prints before it does so. I refer to the comment warning Hilary Sarre of Ian Champions record with regard to only lasting short term in his football appointments.

I suggest that Champion has not always chosen the easiest of roles and therefore some of those have not lasted as long as one might like, but his departures on most occasions have been totally out of his control. The best advice I can give to Hilary Sarre is to speak to the players and coaches that have worked with Champion. Just as Colin Renouf has not had a great rapport with the GFA over the years Champion seems to have problems with Committees. These Committees cannot detract from his achievements and the high regard and respect that his players and previous other coaching partners seem to hold for him.
