A COPY of the Guernsey Secret Press announcing the death of Hitler is one of the highlights at an auction sale of historical documents from this week.
Mullock’s, specialist auctioneers and valuers based in Shropshire, will auction 15 items from the Occupation, including copies of the Nazis’ propaganda magazine, identity cards islanders were forced to wear and Nazi maps of the islands.
Auctioneer Richard Westwood-Brookes said there were some very impressive pieces, particularly the work of the Guernsey Underground News Service.
‘I found the work of the underground press amazing,’ he said.
‘What bravery. These men showed unbelievable courage to get some of what was going on in the war and in the islands out to the public.
‘Those guys risked their lives to let people know that the information they were hearing from the Germans was not exactly the truth.
‘The edition which informed of Hitler’s death is monumental.’

What I find interesting is that Hitler was actually a member of the socialist party.

Andy – Hitler was a member of the NSDAP (English translation National Socialist German Workers Party).
Hitler’s political position was evidence that the political definitions of “right” and “left” are insufficient, as they fail to take into account the social aspect of political ideology, which should be defined on both and economic and social axis.
An interesting resource to check out is the “Political Compass” which can be found at http://www.politicalcompass.org
