BANANAS was the word on thousands of islanders’ lips yesterday.
And the fruit was in their mouths too, as the island played its part in a world record attempt.
As part of Fairtrade Fortnight people were invited to get as many as possible eaten in 24 hours – from noon yesterday until noon today.
Six thousand Fairtrade bananas were distributed to schools, businesses and individuals and at St Sampson’s High and Le Murier, pupils and staff polished off more than 1,000 in a special assembly.
‘We wanted to make sure it was something the students could remember and most importantly they remember what it is all about,’ said St Sampson’s High head Hazel Tetlaw.
She said all the students had been supportive of the attempt. ‘They understand it helps to make the world a fairer place.’
Student Adam Dunn, 16, was pleased to be taking part.
‘It helps give a better understanding of what life is like for some of the farmers and that we can make a difference,’ he said.
‘It’s exciting to think that we could set a record.’
