IMPROVED facilities could make landing easier for passengers who come ashore from cruise ships.

Plans are in hand to spend £200,000 replacing the temporary aluminium quay alongside the inter-island quay with a better and longer structure.

‘It was always part of our plan to extend,’ said harbour master Captain Peter Gill.

‘This is one of the best ideas the harbour has had.’

More than 50,000 people have used the temporary quay since it was installed in April.

Captain Gill said he was pleased with how successful it has been.

‘We took the current quay from our spares,’ he said.

‘Now we want to create a more permanent pontoon as the current one is not sturdy enough for all boats.’

The quay is unusual in that it has a ramp and handrails which make it easier and safer to access.

‘It will be a handy improvement to access facilities,’ said Captain Gill. ‘It would also give us much more flexibility.’

The quay is set to be extended from 24 to 80 metres. It is hoped that it could then be used for all Sark and Herm boats, as well as cruise ship launches and perhaps the Flying Christine.
