Musical youth gather for weekend festival
Thursday 12th March 2009, 2:29PM GMT.
MORE than 200 young Guernsey musicians will perform as part of the Music for Youth regional festival on the weekend. The event, which takes place between 10am and noon and 1 and 3pm on Saturday at the Princess Royal Centre for the Performing Arts, will feature groups from the Music Centre, Ladies’ College and the Grammar School.
Mervyn Grand (pictured), head of Guernsey Schools’ Music Service, said he was delighted to be involved in the event and has cancelled usual Music Centre rehearsals to allow the musicians to take part.
‘This will provide a great opportunity for young Guernsey musicians to show what they can do and to share their music-making with one another,’ he said.
During the morning, four Music Centre groups will perform as well as the Ladies’ College handbell team and Melrose Junior Choir.
In the afternoon, the Music Centre’s Youth Training Orchestra and four Grammar School groups will take to the stage.
Educational charity Music for Youth provides free access to educational and performance opportunities for young musicians and audiences via a nationwide series of festivals and concerts.
It comprises three major events – the Regional Festival Series, National Festival and Schools Prom.
