Post office users have mountain to climb

GUERNSEY POST’S new Smith Street site is tough to get to for the elderly and disabled, according to Postwatch Guernsey.
The watchdog had backed the original plan to move the Smith Street operation to the Information Centre building on the seafront.
Chairman Dennis Le Moignan (pictured) said the hill was still causing a problem for the elderly and disabled.
‘The seafront building was considered to be very accessible for people who travelled to Town by car or bus, especially the elderly and disabled, and by users of wheelchairs and prams,’ said Mr Le Moignan.
‘Very importantly, it was on the flat with no hills to climb.
‘When the deal fell through, the former Oil and Vinegar site was considered and the post office moved into the building late last year.
‘Postwatch did not consider this to be the ideal spot, but its conversion was bright and modern and gave Guernsey Post the opportunity to have a larger retail section selling stationery,’ said Mr Le Moignan.

Is there a wheelchair access ramp? I have only noticed steps outside, but a ramp may be in a different place, i dont know.

There is the Post Office in the Market complex;
much easier to get to.

Yes there is a ramp, touch door opening, low level counters, and hearing loops. The new shop has been designed as if there was a disability discrimination act on Guernsey
