Deputies welcome greater security at Irish meeting

0644263.jpgA GUERNSEY representative at the forthcoming British-Irish Parliamentary Assembly has welcomed plans to step up security at the event after last week’s murders in Northern Ireland.

Deputies Jack Honeybill (pictured) and Graham Guille will attend the three-day event in County Donegal in the Republic of Ireland, but close to the northern border, along with politicians from Ireland, Northern Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales, the Isle of Man and Jersey.

The assembly’s co-chairman, Niall Blaney, said that security would be increased following the murder of two soldiers and a police officer in Northern Ireland by dissident republican terrorists.

‘There are immediate concerns relating to security matters,’ Mr Blaney said.

‘There is concern about recent events and we must ensure security is stepped up.’

Deputy Honeybill said he was not at all concerned about attending the event, but added that tightening security was the right move.

‘If the overall conference was at risk at all they would have cancelled it,’ he said.

‘I think it’s very sensible for them to review the security because, obviously, the Irish people will be outraged with what has gone on. These separatists have undermined the whole peace process. What happened was terrible.’

There’s probably more security at GSY airport than any other security area in the UK. I’ve never seen more cameras per square inch!

    What for?

    Johnny,
It should be obvious, your Chief Minister probably uses the airport. Just as well the security is tight with all these threats from ‘Landsbanki Pensioners’ around.
