Shoppers snap up last chance bargains as Poundworld shuts
Monday 16th March 2009, 2:29PM GMT.
POUNDWORLD has closed its doors for the last time.
Staff and customers bid farewell to the bargain store on the Bridge on Saturday and grabbed the last few items in a 10-for-£1 final sale.
Manageress Doreen Collenette (pictured), who has worked at the store for a decade, said it was an emotional goodbye.
‘It’s sad, very sad. Just ask the customers,’ she said. ‘We have had many happy times, good people to work with, and a lot of regular customers we know.’
She said she had not found another job yet.
Long-time Poundworld shopper Karen du Feu said it was a bad time to lose a store that didn’t break the bank.
‘This was a place people could go for a bargain,’ she said.
‘People want bargains at the moment, but it’s yet another business closing down.
‘It was a lot cheaper than a supermarket or most high street stores and I have come here for years, plus there was always a friendly atmosphere.’
She said she would miss the fact she could try new things without having to overspend.
