Stay local, say builders

THE importance of employing locally has been spelt out to all States members ahead of the capital prioritisation debate in May.0039813.jpg

The Guernsey Building Trades Employers Association has written to deputies outlining what it sees as the benefits of employing local contractors when the States moves ahead with its capital projects programme later this year.

President Mark Palfrey said the group had decided to take the action as it was important to support the local construction industry and keep money circulating locally.

‘The construction industry employs about 3,000 people who in turn support their own family as well as providing a support service.

‘We hope that when facing the tough economic times ahead our problems are not going to be further compounded by work that can be carried out by local firms being placed with non-local businesses.’

Treasury and Resources published its capital prioritisation report earlier this month. This year it wants to see work begin on projects such as the £80m. solid waste plant.

In 2010, projects Treasury wants to see £120m.-worth of projects get under way.

The worry for local builders and tradesmen, according to Mr Palfrey, is that some or much of this work will be go to off-island firms.

‘We consider that the States should try to engage local businesses by making the necessary strategic decisions early in a project’s life. To preclude the local option will see a reduction in the skill base and will further reduce the options available in the job market to school leavers.

‘We are not seeking any sort of subsidy or hand-out. We are trying to inform of the benefits of supporting the local construction industry.’
