ST SAMPSON’S HIGH and the Grammar School reigned supreme in the AFM Super Six Athletics Challenge finals at Beau Sejour.0739263.jpg

St Sampson’s claimed the boys’ title while Grammar took the girls’.

‘It’s a brilliant idea,’ said St Sampson’s head of PE Sam Mauger about the Super Sixes.

‘I know they’ve got the top six of the kids here [in each age group], but the number of kids who have taken part overall is superb.

‘We’ve had 30 Year 8s and 30 Year 9s doing it so they’ve all had a go at it. Anything to get kids doing athletics after school is brilliant.’

Now in its third year and the brainchild of the GIAAC development officer Lee Merrien, the Super Sixes saw the island’s schools compete in an innovative indoor athletics competition.

It was designed to test the four pillars of athletics – speed, strength, power and endurance.

The finals saw the top six athletes in each discipline battle it out for the honours.

The first discipline was a 30m turnaround sprint where an athlete runs and springs off a board.

St Sampson’s Eben Marsh was the star in this as he claimed the Year 8 Boy’s event with a time of 4.57sec.

The 13-year-old explained his technique.

‘I didn’t slow down when I got to the board,’ he said.

Liam Santos took the Year 9 boys’ title. Emma Alderton won the Year 9 girls’ event while Chloe Truffitt of St Sampson’s won the Year 8 girls’ with a time of 4.86.
