Measures for pleasure boaters ‘will be practical’
Friday 20th March 2009, 2:00PM GMT.
CUSTOMERS and Immigration has pledged that any measures extending to pleasure craft as a result of e-Borders will be practical.
‘This service is very concerned at the UK media speculation which has been reported as to how the e-Borders programme may effect UK pleasure craft,’ said chief officer Rob Prow.
‘We’re aware that, quite rightly, the UK Border Agency has started consultation with the key stakeholders in this area. Regrettably, this has been the subject of conjecture.
‘This has also been a subject of front-page news in the island which from the perspective of the service has been unhelpful and caused unnecessary concern to boat owners as well.
‘The position in Guernsey is there are no proposals currently being formulated with regard to how any e-Borders programme which is extended to this Bailiwick will apply to boat owners.
‘It’s far too early in the process to start considering this aspect of the programme.’
The service’s first step will be consulting with the UK Border Agency, airlines and ferry operators on how to collect passenger data.
‘This service, before it makes any proposals to the Home Department board, will ensure that full consultation with all stakeholders will take place and that any such proposals are both practical and assist in making it as easy as possible for legitimate boat owners to enjoy boating.’
The boating aspect is likely to be put to the board between 2012 and 2014.
Customs is writing to all local boating associations about the issue.
