0188062.jpgTHE police presence in Town will be stepped up this weekend after a woman was seriously sexually assaulted by a stranger.

Detective Inspector Ashley Nicholas is leading the investigation into the attack on an 18-year-old girl in St Peter Port early last Saturday.

‘We are treating this as an isolated incident because they are not a regular occurrence in Guernsey, but we are mindful that the offender could attack again,’ he said.

Inspector Nicholas said most victims in such cases know their attacker, but that was not the case this time.

‘She did not recognise her attacker.

‘This is the closest we would ever get to a stranger attack in Guernsey,’ he said.

A team of CID officers has been trawling through hours of CCTV, including that supplied by businesses and pubs in the area including Rogues nightclub, where the victim had been last Friday night.

She was on her own, walking up a pedestrian walkway which leads from St Julian’s Avenue to Beauregard Lane, at 2.30am on Saturday when she was attacked.
