DEPUTIES backed proposals yesterday to make the island’s finance industry help to pay for the body that promotes it.

Until now the States funded GuernseyFinance. Commerce and Employment will now go out to consultation with the industry and other deputies on the amount the sector will contribute.

Minister Carla McNulty Bauer told the States that it was vital to promote the industry. ‘In these difficult and unprecedented economic times and with ever-increasing scrutiny of financial jurisdictions, my board believes it’s essential Guernsey continues to promote itself,’ she said.

The department consulted the Guernsey International Business Association in 2007 about a £300,000 a year contribution from industry to GuernseyFinance.

But in the current economic climate this had to be looked at again, she said.

Deputy McNulty Bauer added many more people needed to be aware of what GuernseyFinance did for the island.

The department recently gave it a £245,000 one-off payment on top of its £900,000 budget.

Long-time GuernseyFinance critic Deputy Janine Le Sauvage said she was disappointed with parts of the report.

    Doesn’t go far enough.

    Charge them the full amount plus any charge for any other service provided to the industry by the States.

    Fits with the Fundamental Spending Review report section 4.12 Process optimisation, service alignment and delivery models where the States can charge for its services.

    I agree, the Island is far to soft when it comes to these vacuum cleaners of money, they take and give very little back, it should be the other way round;

    ‘Any one saying we don’t know what they do for the Island should think not What we must accept is not good enough.

    But I expect there are those who get a pay off are truly satisfied.

    ‘Well now try and satisfy the Islanders; that’s the Job of the States- If they can’t do that then out and let those who can, do the job.
