‘The future is in renewable energy’

GUERNSEY must forget about gas and become a centre of excellence for renewable energy, according to eco-expert Paul Fletcher.
Mr Fletcher, who is business development co-ordinator for E-Si, the energy efficiency specialist, responded to claims by Guernsey Gas that the States should build an energy pipeline from France by saying the island should focus its attention elsewhere.
‘Has carbon-based gas and oil had its day?’ he asked.
‘We are witnessing a mass migration away from gas and oil to electric. It has got to the point now that we refuse to install carbon-based oil or gas boilers, even if they are an efficient, condensing type.
‘The future is heat pumps. The future is offshore tidal, wave and wind turbines and on-shore solar photovoltaics and micro-wind producing electricity to power ultra-efficient heating systems.’
Guernsey Gas claimed that installing a pipeline would bring energy prices down. However, that was refuted by Guernsey Electricity which said it would cost about £80m..
Mr Fletcher said there was still room for Guernsey Gas’s expertise as the island moves towards an electric future.
He said the International Energy Group, which owns Guernsey Gas, had an opportunity to get involved in the development of tidal power and hydrogen gas transport.

He has a point most experts now say we have 10 yrs of Oil left.

Andy has an important point.
Even experts in Sudi Arabia believe oil prices are set to rise.
A recent article in ArabiaBusiness.com states “Oil prices could top $300 per barrel within the next five years, according to one industry expert.
Matthew Simmons, chairman and founder of specialised energy investment banking firm, Simmons & Company International, said the current highs of $100 per barrel are “cheap”.”
I have read numerous other business related and oil specific articles all which emphasize that the price of oil and gas will rise.
the States and Guernsey Gas and Electricity need to make decisions now to secure the long term energy supplies for our island.
There are many examples where alternative energy sources have replaced convential energy manufacture. (e.g. Thermal energy in Iceland; wind turbanies in Pamplona, Spain) These sites made the right decisions years ago and now are reaping the benefits. The proven technology is available here and now. Guernsey has excellent tide and wind resources. Instead of 80 million on a pipe line which will only bring oil and gas at higher and higher costs per barrel into the future, and which will ultimately run out. Lets put 80 million toward renewable manufacture of energy.
