Sunken garden is going dry

Friday 27th March 2009, 2:29PM GMT.

0747154THE sunken garden at Ann’s Place and its surrounding area will become an alcohol-free zone from Sunday.

The measure is being introduced on a six-month trial basis following complaints to police of antisocial behaviour, drunkenness and littering in the area.

The exclusion zone includes the war memorial and surrounding roads.

‘Police officers will have the power to confiscate and discard alcohol containers on which the seals have been broken and people could be prosecuted,’ said Sergeant Andy Hockey (pictured).

‘However, officers’ discretion will be at the forefront and any incidents will be handled in an appropriate manner.’

He said the aim was to work with people and not against them. Reported problems involved people of all ages.

‘The bulk of youngsters are really good and this is not just aimed at them,’ said Sgt Hockey.
