Police give attack alarms to women in Town

ERSONAL attack alarms were handed out to women in Town last night.
The move was in response to a serious sexual assault on a woman that took place in Beauregard Lane, a pedestrian route off St Julian’s Avenue, a week ago.
Guernsey Police crime reduction advisor Andy Goodall said the force had worked in partnership with the Guernsey Licensed Victuallers’ Association and the Crime Prevention Panel to buy the alarms.
‘Based on the events of last weekend, we decided we would take the initiative to acquire a quantity of loose hand-held personal attack alarms of key ring size for distribution to women in the Town area,’ he said.
‘While the events of last week are rare, a single event of this nature is one too many.
‘We lock the doors of our homes and cars when we leave them, so it makes sense to adopt a commonsense approach when it comes to our personal safety.’
He said the alarms had been used successfully in the UK and were designed to deter an attacker and draw attention to any incident.

Voice for Victims is a campaign aimed at promoting the rights of those affected by child sexual abuse.
What on earth is the point of this new stunt? There is no need to “arm” our girls with special gizmo’s – just give them the reassurance of regular police patrols in these sort of neighbourhoods and it is up to us, as concerned parents, to arm our girls with commonsense and street awaredness. Would you react if you heard one of these alarms go off anyway? or would you, probably like me, treat the noise the same way as we do car alarms – with disinterest. The police need to get out of their cars, out of the station and be seen…

Perhaps you could tip off the police as to where and when the next incident will happen so that they can place an officer there

I still cant understand why young women are out walking alone at that time in the morning, surely there are enough warnings from the media etc or do they think they are invincible, personal attack alarms are a good idea but not enough to save them, trying staying in pairs or be picked up, taxi even, best idea.

Every year more teenage girls come of age and start socialising around town. Just because I, as a 30+ year old know not to walk up a dark alley. it doesn’t mean current 18 – 20 year olds don’t need reminding.
An awareness campaign is warranted and I have no issue with it.

Ray, don’t be silly – I am not clairvoyant! I am not suggesting that the police are either – just lets see some police presence a little more obviously. Do you agree with the alarms then? Would you run out of your house in the wee small hours to help someone possibly being attacked just because their alarm goes off?
