Muratti Vase name to be given exemption from anti-smoking law

THE MURATTI Vase looks likely to be able to keep its name.
Last week the Guernsey Press reported that it might have to be renamed because of anti-smoking legislation being drafted in Jersey.
That could have had an impact on the prize for the inter-insular football competition, which is named after a tobacco manufacturer.
Jersey’s Health Department is now seeking an exemption to allow the 104-year-old vase to keep its name.
A similar consultation to the one Jersey based its draft legislation on is going on in Guernsey.
Jersey’s medical officer of health Dr Rosemary Geller told the Jersey Evening Post: ‘The main purpose of the proposed ban on tobacco advertising and display is to stop children smoking.
‘It is unlikely that including the Muratti Vase in the scope of the regulations will help us to achieve this aim.
‘Instead, we want to address children’s everyday exposure to tobacco branding and products,’ she said.
‘We will therefore be seeking an exemption for the phrase Muratti Vase.’

Rightly so….I didn’t even realise Muratti was a cigarette manufacturer until this issue arose. I’m glad common sense has prevailed.
