Galacticos defend the title

0407103GREMLIN Galacticos are the Image Group Premier Division champions.

A final week 10-2 victory over North Social L-Plates proved more than enough to clinch a hat-trick of titles, with Ex-Service Chirpers faring one frame worse off against North Legionnaires.

In search of the nine frames they knew would guarantee them the trophy, the Galacticos got off to a dream start with Adrian Lihou and Glenn Le Prevost opening a 4-0 lead.

Le Prevost led the charge with a first frame break of 48 on his way to a ninth Premier winner’s medal, while Lihou chipped in with a 41.

The next two frames went awry with Darren Hughes and Kevin L. de Carteret both putting the L-Plates on the board, but it was no more than a hiccup for the champions as Adam Shorto went on a scoring rampage.

Shorto mustered breaks of 68 and 64 in his first frame and completed a 3-0 victory with an 81, leaving Paul Le Sauvage with the satisfaction of winning the trophy-clinching frame.

The Galacticos have been pushed harder this season than in either of their previous two, with the Chirpers holding top spot for seven of the 20 weeks.

But it was a deserved title for the Galacticos, as Chirpers captain Martyn Desperques admitted: ‘the most consistent team definitely won the league’.

The Chirpers ended up five adrift of the Galacticos after all but Desperques dropped a frame against the Legionnaires.

A break of 81 completed Desperques’ league season, which saw him win the aggregate prize with a total of 52 frames and defeated just once – in the opening match against Jez Rowe.

Tom Brock, who has enjoyed a fine season, took the Legionnaires’ sole frame in the first half, but the Chirpers continued to plough on through Adrian Holley and Ian Platt.

Both were to drop their final frame, though, with Chris Dorey ending up on a season par with Brock.

Ex-Service Winkers saved their best form until last and ended the season three matches unbeaten.

Such a feat looked too distant to imagine for the Winkers, but a final week 7-5 win over La Villette Gremlins is just reward for their perseverance.

Seb Priaulx’s return to league action brought him a 2-1 win as the Winkers built an early two-frame lead.

John Skillett pegged them back to all square at halfway, but the Gremlins could only manage two more frames through Jess de la Haye, who ended his first snooker campaign with a highly respectable 45% win ratio.

The telling blows for the Winkers stemmed from Colin Gilbert, who delivered the only 3-0 victory on the night, but it was too little too late for the relegated side.

The Winkers finished 14 points adrift of the L-Plates who achieved their aim of survival.

Having risen through the divisions, the L-Plates showed they have much to offer with everyone chipping in.

But none more so than Hughes who gained a top 10 finish with 31 frames, while Milford de Carteret weighed in with his experience to net 22.Image Group Premier Division: Gremlin outfit secure third successive crown.
