PHILEAS Puffin is this year’s Alderney Week mascot. St Anne’s School pupil Lucy Casado designed Phileas for the Alderney Week Logo Competition.

One of 50 entries, her design stood out as the most striking and, as a result, will feature on all of Alderney Week’s Around the World in Eight Days merchandise.

Lucy, 10, said: ‘I saw the film Around the World in 80 Days and particularly liked Phileas Fogg but wanted to bring in a popular local character like Oscar Puffin. So I simply merged the two and created Phileas Puffin. I am really chuffed it worked and that I won the prize.’

Alderney Week team leader Ronnie Cairnduff said: ‘Puffins and plenty of hot air balloons and world globes, all homing in on the island of Alderney, were in abundance and the decision was not an easy one. However, Lucy’s design was without doubt the most striking.

‘Clearly considerable thought and research had gone into this to come up with the famous character of Phileas Fogg played by David Niven in Around the World in 80 Days, sporting his top hat and definitely looking the part.

‘It’s a great design and it does convey our theme of this year’s Alderney Week.’

By winning the event Lucy has followed in the footsteps of her sister Sophie, who designed Super Puffin, the 2006 mascot.

The logo will feature on T-shirts, baseball caps, the Alderney Week programme, posters and stationery and can be used by all sponsors.

Lucy received a 48-piece artist’s easel set during a special assembly on Monday to mark her achievement. Third-placed Maria Etheredge was also honoured, as were nine runners-up. Alderney visitor Molly Evans was the only UK entrant and her design took second place.

Alderney WI has been featured in a national magazine.

WI Life, a publication which is printed eight times a year and delivered to more than 200,000 people, recently ran a piece on Guernsey WI and included information about its sister branch.

President Jean Llewellyn was interviewed for the article, which appears in the April edition.

Jean mentions Alderney’s landscapes and attractions in the piece and details what the organisation does to keep busy throughout the year.

She also talks about Alderney WI’s history.

Jean is quoted as saying: ‘The WI was formed when several young mothers joined forces in 1952 and is still making a positive contribution to island life.

‘We have such varied interests and sub-groups have become a great way of attracting new members.

‘Cinema groups, book clubs and a “knit and natter” have brought new faces to our meetings.

‘It’s of great benefit to the women of the island and allows us to expand our horizons while fostering community spirit.’

Jean said she was pleased with the article and hopes the magazine decides to feature Alderney again in future.
