Four-figure estimates for old local £1 notes

Monday 6th April 2009, 2:29PM BST.

633_869_OBVTHREE rare Guernsey pound notes bearing the date 1 March 1921 go under the hammer on Wednesday in Warwick.

Warwick and Warwick auction house valuer Richard Beale said that during a 22-year career, he had never seen any notes like them.

‘They are very interesting items from a historical point of view. Bank notes from before the Second World War are very rare.’

The notes come from three different issuers.

The note printed by The Guernsey Banking Company is expected to fetch £2,500, while the one from the Guernsey Commercial Banking Company Ltd is estimated at £1,500.

The final note, issued by the States of Guernsey, is expected to fetch £2,000.

They have all been in circulation so have been folded and creased, but Mr Beale said that considering their age they were in good condition.
