Bailiwick beaches shine in 2008 survey

BAILIWICK beaches were among the cleanest in the country last year.
More than 300 people took to the coast locally on 20 and 21 September for Beachwatch 2008, a clean-up and survey organised by the Marine Conservation Society.
The Channel Islands again recorded the lowest density for sewage-related debris in Britain at only 14.1 items per km – 1% of total litter.
The national average for SRD on the UK coastline in 2008 was 135.9 items, with the highest level in the south-west at 228.2 items per km.
Litter from beach visitors was the main problem locally, with a density of 588.7 items per km surveyed – almost 41% of all litter and an increase of 7% on the previous year. Fishing litter dropped from 276.7/km in 2007 to 224.4/km but was the second largest source of litter in the Channel Islands, followed by that from shipping at 28.4/km.
Environment minister Peter Sirett (pictured) said Guernsey had some of the most beautiful beaches and coastline in the world and it was a shame some chose to spoil it by thoughtless behaviour.

How ironic. Yesterday a story about How beaches are closed due to Rubbish. Today how their some of the cleanest in the country. Make your mind up.

You could have fooled me – I actually stopped going to Cobo last summer (for the first time in my life) because the beach was covered in chip wrappers, drinks cans, bottles and other rubbish. And it wasn’t just kids and it certainly wasn’t tourists leaving their trash on the beach – an awful lot of local adults (including parents) do the same.
No doubt the culprits consider themselves “proud Guerns” – they should be ashamed ot themselves.

Then there’s the millions of gallons of raw sewage we pumped over the beaches last summer….

Now now! don’t be like that about the rubbish on the beach, and raw sewage everywhere,
That minister is looking for a new job; He wants to be a Comedian!

I suppose they will preserve them by making them all into marinas!

Yes I admit the beaches are beautiful–
At least when it’s high tide:
