Sark enters £19k dispute with its own ship company
Wednesday 8th April 2009, 1:00PM BST.
A CHIEF PLEAS subcommittee is refusing to pay more than £19,000 that has been unexpectedly demanded by Sark’s shipping company.
Isle of Sark Shipping, in which Chief Pleas is the 100% shareholder, and Public Works are in dispute over the bill that came without warning from the company to cover transport of skips containing waste last year.
On 14 January, IoSS wrote to the committee saying that it would be charged monthly £100 per skip per return journey and that that would apply from 2008.
‘Prior to the receipt of that letter there had been a small levy of £5 on skips of tin and paper only, that charge having been based on the mistaken belief that such waste generated a financial return,’ said deputy chairman of the douzaine, Conseiller David Melling, in a Public Works report to Chief Pleas.
‘All other skips were carried free of freight charge.’
Public Works, a subcommittee of the douzaine, covered Guernsey crane costs.
A day after the initial letter, the subcommittee responded saying it would not agree to the new charge being applied until 1 May.

This IS as daft as it sounds.
Whatever happened to the spirit of free enterprise?
A sensible and simple compromise is surely needed. Harbour dues, landing charges and crane charges for non-Sark Shipping vessels should be charged at sensible but slightly higher rates.
Get Captain Sensible in Sark. Put the grudges behind you. People are now laughing at your petty narrow mindedness. It’s time to get real.
Vive la free market!
