Ex-seeding-ly bad news
Thursday 9th April 2009, 2:29PM BST.
AN UNSEEDED Guernsey could have to battle through a ‘group of death’ in the NatWest Island Games men’s football competition.
The organisers of the tournament at the Games, which are being held in Aland between Saturday 27 June and Saturday 4 July, have decided to base the seedings for the group stage on the last Games held in Rhodes in 2007.
As Guernsey did not send a men’s football team to Rhodes, they miss out as Aland, as the host island, and the three medallists from Rhodes – champions Gibraltar and Rhodes themselves and the Western Islands – will all be seeded.
This is despite the fact that in the previous three Island Games Guernsey won gold twice and silver once.
The island boss, Tony Vance (pictured), is unhappy with the situation.
‘It’s obviously disappointing as we could be facing a “group of death” situation,’ he said.
‘We’ve not helped ourselves by the fact that we didn’t go to Rhodes.’
