There’s no stopping Pecker
Wednesday 15th April 2009, 2:29PM BST.
THE Wayside Cheer witnessed ‘Pecker’ take on the ‘The Wizard’, ‘The Viking’, ‘Psycho Sid’, ‘The Welsh Rarebit’ and an assortment of other lesser-known local darts players last week.
While Chelsea were making Andy Gray struggle to spit out superlatives to describe their 3-1 win over Liverpool in the Champions League, there was not a TV in sight in the ballroom at the Wayside where a professional-looking stage and dart board, complete with coloured lighting, scoreboard and sound system had been set up.
The occasion: BDO world number nine Brian ‘Pecker’ Woods (pictured) was in town to play two nights of exhibition matches and in front of a crowd – he meant business.
On the Thursday night, the professional darts player faced the cream of the island’s darts scene, the Guernsey inter-insular side, while the night before he met characters from the Guernsey Darts League.
‘It’s been a great night and Brian made the night,’ said island men’s captain Mick Le Gallic, who compeered the evening.
‘He calmed the players down because a lot of them haven’t been on the stage before.’
