Bangkok death toll is higher than reported
Friday 17th April 2009, 2:29PM BST.
MORE people have been killed in the Bangkok protests than has been reported, according to a local woman in Thailand.
Camille Goddard, 25, and her father Rob, both pictured, travelled to Bangkok with Camille’s stepmother last week to visit family.
She was based initially in the city, before travelling to a remote village. Her hotel was blocked because of the protests.
‘I wasn’t scared as I didn’t know what was going on,’ she said.
‘But I could see all the red shirts from my balcony. It went on all night on loudspeaker.
‘Since I’ve come up north I have been in a remote village, so I have heard about the shootings from villagers who have seen it on TV and radio. They say more have been killed than the international media is aware.’
News reports have said that only two people have been killed and 130 injured in clashes between protesters, Thai citizens and security forces.
Miss Goddard said there had been protests outside of the capital in the nearest town to her, Udon Thani, but also in the border crossings to Laos.
‘The locals are not worried,’ she said.
