DESPITE the chill in the air, a record number of hikers and their dogs took part in the Heritage Beach Walk yesterday.
The charity event, sponsored by the Heritage Group in aid of the Mines Awareness Trust, was to help fund training for mine detection dogs.
Close to 200 people walked from Pembroke to Portelet or picked up the route half-way along at Fort Hommet.
The rain held off and the cool weather was described by several of those taking part as ideal for walking.
Sam Evans of MAT was delighted with the turnout.
‘We’ve had about 170 in total,’ she said. ‘I think we can safely say it’s doubled last year. Then, there was thunder and lightning.
‘We’ve had quite a few people turn up giving £20 donations. That didn’t happen last year.
‘Quite a few people brought their dog. One person had even borrowed a dog.’
