Swine flu risk seen as serious

Monday 27th April 2009, 1:00PM BST.

Dr Stephen BridgemanAN OUTBREAK of deadly swine flu in Mexico is being regarded as a serious threat to the island by the director of public health.

But Dr Stephen Bridgman (pictured) said the authorities were prepared if a pandemic did hit Guernsey.

‘We have a pandemic flu planning group, which includes hospital staff, GPs and pharmacists.

‘We do have some anti-virals and vaccinations, although we aren’t sure how effective they are against this threat yet. We are taking this threat seriously.’

The H1N1 swine flu is the same strain that causes seasonal flu outbreaks in humans, but the newly detected version contains genetic material from versions of flu which usually affect pigs and birds.

It broke out in Mexico and had killed more than 100 people this morning. The illness has spread and non-fatal cases have been reported in New Zealand, America and elsewhere.

Thank goodness, you have a forward thinking Island and I, for one, am pleased that the powers that be did spend 200K and that the flu drugs are still in date.

Nursie, ironically, evidence suggests that the swine flu strain H1N1 is resistant to Tamiflu – the £200k+ worth of flu drugs that Guernsey bought……

Not according to the news last night, they said it wasn’t as effective as it is on other strains but would still have some positive effects

Your figures of deaths in Mexico are under what is being released its now over 200 and 1900+ still sick.
Cases are popping up all over the world and 17 cases have been identified in Scotland. I honestly belive this can spread as fast as wild fire due to planes air systems and the enclosed spaces in airports, hence the spread seems to be mostly from people who have frequented Manchester,Heathrow Airport. Forget Tamiflu, its not worth the needle it goes in. I have had that first hand. I have been told that Colloidal Silver will probably be of more use to an Uknown quantity such as this.

Thanks Phil. But I’ll stick with the World Health Organisation, whose studies in the UK a month ago showed a 98% resistance to Tamiflu (the trade name for oseltamivir) in the Influenza H1N1 strain….

Nursie there has been conjecture over the Mexico incident that the Tamiflu is not effective against this Strain which is not being accepted as a normal phenomena. People have died in Mexico after taking the Tamiflu 6 hours after infection.
I’d rather believe a Virologist in Mexico City than a Suit who is just trying to Calm the masses with words.

Loosechange thats a very good link for Live News and so is Coast to Coast. Very imformative, unfortunaly there are too many Sheeple in this world to care.

Without causing hysteria, that fact is nobody knows what this is, Doctors, Nurses, nobody. In my opinion I’ll stick to what the virologist said and protect yourself with Colloidal Silver and Vitamin C. Common Sense people
