With sterling weak against the euro, a recent advertising campaign highlighted the island as a destination where Britons could get good value.
‘The euro exchange rate is being good to Guernsey,’ said Chris Elliott, director of marketing and tourism for Commerce and Employment.
‘We are hoping more people will pick the island where a pound is still a pound.
‘Our brochure demand has gone up 95%. I’ve just had to authorise a reprint of 31,000 copies to keep up with the demand. That’s the first time we have done a reprint for years and years.’
Mr Elliott, along with Commerce and Employment minister Carla McNulty Bauer and Chris Sharp, chairman of the hospitality and tourism group, chaired a seminar for local tourist industry representatives yesterday morning.
This was the first time that the minister had attended one of the regular seminars, which will now be held twice-yearly.

All these prospective tourist (well the ones who actually receive a brochure – my son has been waiting since January) will arrive to find lots of hotels and tourist attractions closed! Not to worry though you have the finance industry to keep you going!

steve – I think they mean ‘good value’ in terms of comparison to the Euro exchange rate, that’s their selling point.
Also, whilst I agree that increased orders for brochures does not mean ‘bums on (condor) seats’, it does give a good indication of a potential increase in tourism levels this year.
alderney girl – Errr, hello………the story is about increased brochure orders, not bookings!

PHM, I’m curious – why on earth will they be closed?

Unless the prices to get to Guernsey, and stay are reduced, then I’m going nowhere near a ferry port to Guernsey, even though I’d love to come back. At £200 return +, just for the car, before the passengers are added, I can’t justify the cost, when it is much less to stay in a UK resort. Guernsey’s a lovely place, but its turning into somewhere only yuppies can go to. This upsets me.
