St Paul’s 3, Rovers 1
ROVERS have admitted that the better side on the day won the under-16 Upton.
In front of a crowd of more than 250 at Springfield on Saturday, the Guernsey champions took an early lead only for St Paul’s to come back to win.
‘As we told the lads, they [St Paul’s] were the better side,’ said Rovers coach Mark Pemberton.
‘We’ve gone over there confident to go and win the game, but we’ve not played as well as we have done during the season. We’ve given everything but it just wasn’t enough on the day.
‘But you’ve got to give St Paul’s credit. They were a very good side.’

I now live in Jersey but was brought up in Guernsey and played most of my football career there, so when it comes to matches like this my loyalty is with Guernsey! It also helped that my son Callum Wall was playing for Rovers against St Pauls, but did not as I now play, albeit slower these day, for St Pauls, but I have to agree with Mark that St Pauls did play the better football on the day. Rovers did have some great passages of play at times but just not enough on the day. St Pauls also had the best player on the pitch in their No. 10 Jake. He effectively ran the show and showed why he is on a professional clubs books. I was quite surprised however, that Rovers did not try to man mark him with someone to rustle his feathers a bit at 2-1. Saying that I am not a fan of teams changing their style of play for one player but when it was apparent Rovers were not having one of their best days, then to maybe change things? Saying that, I was really impressed with the way the Rovers lads did not drop their heads and kept fighting to the end and were encourage constantly by Mark and his assistants. Overall they did Rovers and Guernsey proud with their attitude on and off the pitch in defeat. Well done to all the players and coaching staff for a great season and let’s hope they can move forward and progress with a certain friend of mine, Mr Stevenson’s help!
